Thurs & Fri we camped at Goose Island State Park in Rockport, TX. There were sites on the Aransas Bay & wooded sites. We choose a wooded site for the coolness. It was 99 degrees, hot & humid. It was still hot, but at least we had shade. We had poor cell reception & I could not access my ipad. State parks do not offer Wi-Fi. Goose Island SP is located on the southern tip of the Lamar Penisula. It is home of the "BIG TREE", a massive coastal live oak estimated to be one thousand years old! It is 44 feet tall, has a crown spread of 89 feet & a trunk circumference of 35 feet. There are some other neat looking live oaks in the park, but none as large as the Goose Island Oak.
Friday we drove 1hr 20 minutes south to Mustang Island State Park, Port Aransas, TX. We had tried to get a site there for 2 nights, but they were booked. After visiting it I am glad that we didn't. The RV sites were on a macadam surface with no trees or shade of any sort. It was like parking in a parking lot. There were sand dunes between the sites & the gulf beach, so you could not see the water from your site. The gulf beach was full of seaweed & jellyfish. You could see oil well platforms from the beach. There were no shells to collect, but I did find one sea bean - A Hamburger! The sea beans come from the jungles of South America. I collected many on Satellite Beach, FL.
We left Mustang Island State Park & stopped for lunch at Snoopy's Pier on the bay. Great location & the food was excellent. When we left Snoopy's we stopped at a nearby gift shop with a sandcastle facade. The facade was unique. Of course I took pics of it, but am having trouble figuring how to download them.
We left Goose Island State Park today. It was 80 degrees at 8 AM. We are headed to Sam Houston Jones State Park in Louisiana. It is approximately a 6 hour drive from Rockport, TX. I am writing this blog as Rick is driving through Houston, TX. I had to get near the Interstate to get cell reception.
